Eccentric clergyman and self-styled prophet, Passion Java has come under fire for his antics following his processions across major cities on Saturday. Critics have raised the alarm that Java is hosting Covid-19 “superspreader” events at a time when some health experts are warning of an impending third wave of the pandemic.
At the events which were held in Chegutu, Kadoma, Kwekwe, Gweru and Bulawayo, the social media savvy prophet was surrounded by multitudes of fans eager to catch a glimpse or to get a selfie with the flamboyant prophet. Unfortunately, at most of these events, there were no attempts at social distancing and the vast majority of people were not wearing any masks.
Others called for Prophet Passion Java to be arrested for contravening Covid-19 regulations, citing the case of MDC Youth leaders, Joanna Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbumu who were arrested for addressing a press conference with only 8 people.
Critics accused the police of the selective application of the law. They also highlighted the case of Murewa vendors who were arrested last year for cheering Nelson Chamisa. The vendors were later fined for “obstructing free movement of traffic and persons.”
However, others defended the prophet saying that it is not his fault that he is so popular with people. They also argue that he never called on the people to gather around him and that those in attendance are doing so of their own volition.
